A Short History of Bingo

Were it not for a simple mistake by a player in 1929, bingo as we know it would not be called ‘bingo’ at all. At a carnival near Atlanta, Georgia, American businessman Edwin Lowe was watching players fill lines on their playing cards with beans. The game was called ‘Beano’, so Lowe took it back to New York.

After one of his friends shouted ‘bingo’ by mistake, the game we all know and love was born. Lowe started charging rival companies $1 to use the bingo name and the rest, as they say, is history.

Internet bingo came a lot later of course, but hats off to Lowe for taking a great idea and running with it.

As of this year, bingo is still going strong. Over 3 million people play bingo online and offline every week. A huge number that even dwarfs the number of people who attend Premiership football matches every week.
