2008 is not only a great year for bingo promotions, it's also a leap year and according to tradition, the 29th of February is the one day women are allowed to propose to men.
Looking through our bingo history books, this tradition dates back to the 5th century and came about when Saint Brigid of Kildare complained to Saint Patrick about how long women had to wait for a marriage proposal (well they didn't have online bingo to occupy the time!). So St Patrick (possibly tired of the nagging and complaining) concluded that 'yearning females' could propose on this one day every four years!
But the folklores don't stop there. In 13th century Scotland, any man who declined a marriage proposal was fined! The fine could be anything from a kiss to a new dress! We're liking the sound of this!
Tradition is a funny thing and while us 21st century, bingo loving women far from need permission to do anything, this is one custom that seems to have stuck in our folklore-loving hearts!
But even if you don't fancy taking the plunge or simply don't want to give up seeing your man get down on one knee, why not use 29th February to propose something else to your man?
And in case you're stuck, here's what our bingo chat masters are planning on proposing to their men for some inspiration.
CM Laura: "As you all know from my bingo profile, I love to travel and top of my list of places to see is New York. So I'm going to propose to my boyfriend that we start saving (we'll just play penny bingo on Thursdays!) and go sometime this year!"
CM Rosie: "My fella and I are always down the gym and believe it or not we actually love it! So much so, I'm going to propose to him that we run one of the UK's half marathon this year - as a pair of bingo balls!"
CM Stella: "Unlike Rosie, I'm a bit of a couch potato, sitting on the sofa with my laptop on my knee playing online bingo! My boyfriend's the same, except he's watching football. But I'm going to propose we leave our nesting areas, tackle the growing amount of tat that's in our loft and turn into an attic room with a beautiful skylight.
It's a big job but how great would it be to have a room dedicated for me and my friends to play bingo in while him and his friends are watching the match! It would be like having my very own bingo hall!"
CM Matilda: "I love dogs and I really want another one (to keep Benny company when I'm talking in the bingo chat rooms!) so I'm going to propose just that to my boyfriend. The thing is I'm also going to propose that we get a girl dog and have puppies! It'll be good practice when we have children. Don't think I'll tell him that bit!"
CM Cleo: "You all know me as the Littlewoods Bingo horror film buff. Well, I want to stop being part of the audience and get on the other side of the camera! There's a local drama group who put on shows every now and then and I'm going to propose that my boyfriend and I audition"
