Beat the Winter Blues

It’s the time of year that most Britons dread – the clocks going back and what little evening daylight remained is gone until the Spring. The winter chills start to set in and people start dreaming of that Summer holiday that seems so far away. Luckily, Littlewoods Bingo is on hand to help you beat the Winter blues, and of course, what better pastime to keep you occupied that fabulous online bingo!

We Brits have endured flash flooding, the wettest summer since 1914 and the coldest August for 20 years. No wonder around 3% of the UK population suffers from a form of depression called SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and over a third of us admit to being unhappier during the bleaker months. A lack of sunlight can lead to people displaying a variety of symptoms, including lack of energy, lack of sleep, overeating and poor moods.

Look on the bright side with Littlewoods Bingo - here are our Top 5 tips to help you feel better during the Winter months.

Take it Outside
Try to get out of the house or office for at least half an hour a day – you need to seize the daylight while you can! Getting some fresh air, even if it is a dull day, will help to lift your mood.

Why not take a walk to the shops, let the dog run around in the park, or walk the kids to school in the morning. Just a short period in daylight could make you feel better.

If you normally play online bingo during the day, perhaps you could nip out and meet one of your bingo buddies for a coffee. Don’t forget that games start every few minutes, so you can always come back to your favourite bingo game after you’ve hit the coffee shop!

Get Physical
Scientists have long-since proved that exercise can help to improve your mood and make you feel better.

Obviously, you could combine a little exercise with the point above – why not take a brisk walk around the block, take the stairs at work rather than the lift, or get off the bus a few stops early and walk the rest of the way.

If you need to stay in the house to look after the kids/pets or you’re waiting for the gas man, there are still plenty of simple exercises you can do in and around the home:

  1. Dig the garden for half an hour
  2. Put on your favourite CD and dance while you vacuum the house
  3. Wash and wax the car
  4. Walk up and down your stairs a few times

Go Bananas
Although the Autumn and Winter months are generally famed for carbohydrate-packed meals such as stews, hotpots and warm puddings like treacle sponge and custard, you should make sure to include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet too. Overdoing the comfort foods can actually lead to your mood getting worse, so stock up on those vital vitamins and minerals and you’ll feel more alert and healthier.

For the best value and tastiest fruit and vegetables, why not talk to your greengrocer about what is in season.

And Another Thing...
Don’t keep all your feelings inside, having a good moan to your neighbour about the weather is all part of being British – think of it as your birthright. Openly talking about your feelings with friends and family will help you feel better too.
Happy Holidays
It’s a good job we British are know for being a resilient lot – so there’s always next Summer’s holiday to look forward to. In fact, more and more travel agents are advertising prices for next Summer weeks earlier than before. as they know we are spending increasing amounts of time during the cold months wishing we were somewhere else.

So why not book early and give yourself something to look forward to.

Of course, if you win big while playing online your mood will probably improve considerably. Why not see if it’s your lucky day by playing some of your favourite bingo games with your bingo buddies. If you’re new to Littlewoods Bingo, why not read our Bingo FAQs before you get started.
