Top romantic film locations to visit Valentine’s Day can be full of clichés; from roses to chocolates and romantic candlelit dinners. Not that there’s anything wrong with that of course but if you fancy getting out of the house with your beloved, or if you’re single and want to get away from the city centre couples filling up all the restaurants, then why not visit some of the most romantic places in the UK. So inspiring in fact were the locations, that some of the most popular romantic films were shot in these locations.
Four Wedding and a Funeral
Take your pick of locations for this movie; Wedding number one was shot at St Michaels in Betchworth, Surrey , Royal Naval College Chapel, Wedding number two was shot at Greenwich and Wedding number three was shot at London to Albury Park in Surrey.
Pride and Prejudice
For those with a penchant for Colin Firth diving into lakes then Chatsworth House in Derbyshire is the location for Pemberley in the film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice or visit Burghley House in the Peak District for some fantastic views and plenty of walking paths for some quiet walks in the beautiful scenery. Pack a picnic and you’ve got your own romantic locations all around – just pick a spot!
Brief Encounter
The classic David Lean film features many train station scenes; which were all filmed at Carnforth station near Lancaster. Make like Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard and steal a kiss underneath the platforms clock.
Notting Hill
Richard Curtis’ modern classic conjures up images of quaint bookshops, private London gardens and press conferences in hotels. You can actually visit The Travel Bookshop which incidentally is actually on Notting Hill; you can also visit Kenwood House on Hampstead Heath which is where Julia Roberts’ character was shot filming a film within a film.
Shakespeare in Love
Take a trip to Holkham in Norfolk where you will find Holkham Hall where Viola and Will declare their love, and the beach at Holkham is where the movie ends, with heroine Gwyneth Paltrow stranded on a deserted beach.
Sense and Sensibility
Another Austen classic was made into a film adaptation in 1995 starring Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant and Kate Winslet. Montacute House in Somerset is where Kate Winslet was filmed taking a walk in the rain. Trafalgar Park in Salisbury is the location for Barton Park. Marianne and Brandon’s wedding was filmed at Berry Pomeroy Church in Berry Pomeroy, Devon.
